TRUMP IS THE SYMPTOM. THE SYSTEM IS THE PROBLEM.
Donald Trump didn't invent political polarization, propaganda, executive overreach, misinformation, or the exploitation of loopholes in our government.
Those vulnerabilities existed long before he entered politics.
The presidency was already enormously powerful. Congress was already polarized. Political media was already fragmented. Social media algorithms were already rewarding outrage and division. Billions of dollars were already being spent to influence voters.
And perhaps most concerning, our political system was already relying heavily on something that isn't always written into law: the willingness of people in positions of power to exercise restraint.
What Trump has demonstrated is what happens when someone begins asking a different question.
Not, "Has a president traditionally done this?"
Not, "Would this damage the institution?"
But rather, "Can anybody actually stop me?"
And that's where I believe Americans, regardless of political affiliation, should be paying attention.
Because eventually Donald Trump will no longer be president.
But the political machinery will remain. The algorithms, the money, the manipulation, the legal ambiguities, the concentrated power, and the incentives to exploit every weakness will still be there.
And the next person can learn from everything that worked.
So here's the question I believe every American should be asking:
Do we want an American system whose survival depends on every future president voluntarily choosing not to exploit every vulnerability available to them?
Because if the answer is no, then simply defeating or defending one politician doesn't solve the problem.
We have to fix the vulnerabilities.
We have to rebuild a shared relationship with evidence.
We have to understand how political information reaches us.
We have to strengthen institutions where the law is ambiguous.
And we have to stop treating every political disagreement as a contest between teams where acknowledging an inconvenient fact means helping the enemy.
That is the larger warning.
Trump is the person forcing us to confront it.
The system is the thing we have to repair.
And here's the standard I believe matters most:
If you're comfortable with a president exercising a particular power only when that president belongs to your preferred political party, perhaps the problem isn't who's exercising the power. Perhaps it's that the power exists without sufficient safeguards.
